Bless those who persecute you

Posted by pstrtimreynolds on January 24, 2014 at 10:35 AM Comments comments (0)

Romans 12:14 Bless those who persecute you. Don't curse them; pray that God will bless them. (NLT)

How can you really have an attitude of blessing towards the person who persecutes you? This is a very hard thing to do. Realize that it’s these times that makes us who we really are. The only way for it to be productive is by changing our thoughts towards the persecution. If you really believed that persecution will make you a better, stronger person then it will change your heart towards the persecutor.

Violent People

Proverbs 3:31 Don't envy violent people or copy their ways. (NLT)

Have you ever had someone blow up at you for small reasons? Be cautious not to model after this behavior. Believe it or not, over time violence and short tempers begin to seep into our ways. We then carry forward this type of behavior even when we know it is unacceptable.

A Good Heart

Luke 6:45 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. (NLT)

Many times we try to disconnect our hearts from our mouths. In actuality, the words we say are a reflection of our heart. If your mind focuses on picky details, comparisons and judgments then, of course, your mouth will pour out words of criticism. But if you revere someone with honor and reverence then naturally, words of respect will follow. Try monitoring your words to get a glimpse into your heart. Not only will you experience a difference, but so will others.

Shadows of Shame

Psalm 34:5 Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces. (NLT)

Shadows of shame certainly do darken our face. There's nothing like shame that makes you want to hide. We all have things in our past where we are filled with regret. The power of God's grace can overcome anything we have done. We must first look to God and He will help give us radiant faces.

Spouting Off Before Listening

Proverbs 18:13 Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish. (NLT)

Have you ever accused someone based upon limited knowledge? It's always embarrassing being set straight with the facts after you just revealed yourself to be a fool. Let's not forget that shameful feeling. Instead, let's use it as fuel to probe out the truth with an open heart instead of spouting off on half-based truth. Your words will either bring life or death.

Great Faith

Daniel 3:17-18 "If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn't, we want to make it clear to you, You Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up." (NLT)

A lot of times we have our faith backwards. If God does XYZ, then we will believe. But these men had a powerful faith. Even if God didn't save them from death, they still stood their ground. Most of us won’t stick our neck out until the condition is just right for us. It comes down to trust. Will you still trust in God even if it appears God didn't come through?

Battling Anger

Psalm 103:8 The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. (NLT)

The key to battling anger is fighting it away with unfailing love for others. If you really love someone you will put yourself in the other person’s shoes. They too are a son or daughter of Christ and should be treated as such. How long does it take before you get angry? Challenge yourself to increase your tolerance for your anger. When you feel that you are about to get angry, stop and ask yourself if you really have a legitimate reason to be angry. I find that most of the time my answer is no.

Good Stewards

Matthew 25:14 Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. (NLT)

Have you ever loaned out a tool, your car, or something of value, only to find the item broken, dented, or chipped when it was returned? This is a reflection of the stewardship of the other person. I’ve always taught my children if something tears up while you are borrowing it, it is your responsibility. If you think about it, God has made us stewards too. He blesses us with food, shelter, and even relationships. One day we will have to account for the things God blessed us with. Are you the person who will return an item in better condition than when you received it? If not, I want to challenge you today. Make the best out of what God has given you!

God's Will For You

Psalm 143:10 Teach me to do your will for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing. (NLT)

Have you ever wondered what God's will is for your life? Wouldn’t it be nice, if He would just send it in an e-mail to eliminate any confusion? It's worth pointing out that David didn't ask to be shown God’s will. Instead, he asks for God to teach him to do His will. Imagine if you learned to do God's will how the uncertainty, doubts, and fears would be eliminated. Allow the Spirit to lead you to solid ground by asking God to teach you His will.

No One Is Righteous

As the Scriptures say Romans 3:10 , "No one is righteous - not even one." (NLT)

Do you look around at others who may not be as faithful as you and get angry? Do you wonder how they could behave the way they do and hope God punishes them for what they deserve? After all, you've always gone to church. Unfortunately, that kind of thinking has a self-righteous tone when we compare ourselves to others. Don't get sucked into thinking that way because it will hold you captive to anger. Apart from Jesus, everyone is a sinner.

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,(NKJV)
